Congratulations to Roddy for only getting half the newly painted Hexosaur artillery killed this week... sigh.

Next week, WW2 with Robin, Dave and Brett - or so Dave says, anyway; Dungeon Delving with Rob, Bookmark, Roddy, James and Vince; and Something Else with other people.

Congratulations to Mick for winning best game at Plymouth with his VBCW game. Seems a bit full circle as I'm sure wwe won best Plymouth once before - Gladiators maybe?

Especially early this week so Robin can plan his week....

A shocking state of affairs for a wargames club when there's more roleplaying than wargaming going on. At least the GMs were enjoying themselves though. Next week we have Martian Empires with JDE, Kris, Roddy and Bradley; Saga with Andy, Vince, and Bookmark; Brigade Ops with Dave and Rob; and no doubt a dodgy board game in the corner.

Serveral of the club are making trips to the Plymouth Show - http://www.paw2012.co.uk/ - to run a VBCW game and raid the bring and buy. Have fun.

Legionary now has almost all the trader space booked, although probably room for a couple more, and it's looking good. Tournament packs for WFB and 40K are also now available from the site.

Some 15mm 1859-1871 images ...

Dave says "Time to take over the blog again and post a few images of my 15mm goodness". First let's look at the Brunswick troops from 1866 who fought for Prussia, these are conversions from the Lancashire Nassau range, easy to paint and easy to command (unless you are using James's dice).

Next come a few 1866 Hanoverians who opposed the Prussians at Langensalza, Lancashire figures again:

This is my French force that can be used from 1859 through to 1871 on a beautiful carpet backdrop. It is a mixture of Minifigs and Irregular 15mm figures:

Everyone needs a few Old Guardsmen with large bearskins:

Austrians ... 1859 and 1866 periods covered here with Ian Kay's Irregular Miniatures. These fought Prussians, Italians and French so are a pretty flexible Army if you ever wanted to invest in one, just like their Napoleonic ancestors.

The Italians come from Minifig French converted with a pot of paint and some QRF ACW who closely resembled the Grenadiers of the 1859 and 1866 period. They look nice, but their commanders were particularly pants! See if you can work out which ACWs I converted in the last phot below:

A busy night at the club with 6 tables covering WW2, Dark Ages, Napoleonic, Fantasy and Sci fi. And we had enough tables and lights to go round…

Next week we have the return of the miniature wargamer and something Ottoman, with Mike, Brett, Rob and Bill; Bo5A (subtle enough?) with Dave, Bookmark, JDE, Roddy and Taff ; and Traveller with Kris, Andy G, Trainset, Bradley, Vince and Mick.

In other news, it was agreed the cupboards were a shambles and it was Phil's fault, he has been deputised to tidy them up ASAP. Even though I'm not sure he's even been to the Bath House venue. Hurry up...

Last weeks Epic game was fought to a conclusion shortly after ten, the Orks destroying some terminators and whirlwinds but being conclusively wiped out. Seeing as you ask.

This week sees a return to Robin's very pretty WW2 with Robin, Bradley, Brett and Trainset; Kings of War with Bill, Bookmark, Taff and one other?; Saga (promises, promises) with Andy B, Vince and Mick; Kris luring people into traveller character generation; the RPFC playing some thing with flags and complaining I don't keep track of what they play; and Roddy and I playing 1st edition Necromunda.

Games review 2011 - Hail Caesar

Rick Priestly fan club reporting here for duty. This game saw a Dacian horde tasked with stealing two Roman Eagles from a couple of Legions and then killing everyone else on the table - simples. It began with a brave show of horde like tendancies aimed at making the Romans quake in their sandals, they responded by simply standing still and ignoring them. In fact the Romans were to do lots of standing still that night, much to the disgust of Rob who couldn't make a command roll to save his Roman Forum Political career.

In the first turn, one of the Dacian Chieftains decided to blunder early on, Dave was using the lucky dice from the club cupboard - cheers for that fellas. Rob laughed at the sight of two warband sixes on display, but not for long because the result of the blunder was an uncontrolled charge up hill against the Romans, which saw an improbable Dacian victory - strike one Eagle.

Next, and finally with Rob only being able to move due to initiative (he was still failing miserably with his command rolls) the Dacians were charged by a Roman Legion which then

got surrounded and beaten up by a bunch of ragged warbands - Strike two Eagles.

Rob hurrumphed off the to the bar saying something like "rules wrong, dice unlucky". Dave assumed a smug smile and with his horde marching off with some new shiney Roman toys.

Games review 2011 - China vs NATO

Some images from a Cold War Commander Game between Dave and Rob late in 2011. A Chinese horde confidently attacked NATO in hidden positions circa 1980. First we see the hidden NATO positions ... well actually we can't see them because they are hidden - duh!

Following this the Chinese attacked the centre across a ford they found very early on - something to do with their webbed feet:

But they got stuck, mainly because of the NATO hidden troops opening up with LAW, MILAN and Medium MGs.

The Chinese did manage to kill the MILAN team and it's supporting infantry on the NATO right flank, which was a very high priced piece of kit to be lost to the Chinese.

But then the NATO armour counter attacked and stalled the entire Chinese assault. Oh well, there's always tomorrow and the rest of the Yellow Peril horde that didn't make it onto the table - we shall see in 2012 if they can turn Europe into a Eutopian Communist state with little Red books everywhere.

First Session of a new year

Vince and Andy don horned helmets & zimmers for Saga; Rob, Dave and Bill attempt something little and WW2 ish; Robin, Mick, Brett and Bookmark show how different they are to the RPFC and play something little and WW2 ish; Bradley and Kris play WW2 the only sane way with Memoir 44; and me and Trainset are taking Tom up the Khyber. Stop sniggering at the back.

Week after I think is Wild West and Aztecs -hopefully on different tables. Pathfinder on the 28th.

Week after - there has been talk of Hail Cromwell (the insurgent rather than the tank I think); and Knuckles has said he'll bring a game down. I'll run something (as yet undecided) for 3 or 4 people. Discuss on the yahoogroup because I'm not stopping half way through my nut loaf for this at nine next week.

Hard as it was for me to cope with the waves of enthusiasm and organisation at nien o'clock [1] I'm informed the following is happening. RPFC are playing either HC or BP; and James, Roddy, Bradley and Trainset are playing Hordes of the Things. That's all folks.

Week after is the 7th and the Club Christmas meal - the pub has taken a proper paying booking that night so THERE IS NO CLUB 07/12/11. We'll be downstairs eating and drinking.

The Bristol show was a very pleasant day out, thanks to Bradley for driving and Mick for laying on the game - much admired and discussed, and responsible for boosting Bristol's economy with extra tea light sales. Good to catch up with the Berkeley Vale club in my case, GWP regulars in Mick's, and do a very small ammount of shopping.

Games for 19th October

Right then. This week I was given command of the Bismarck and successfully sunk the Hood by 21:00. Not often History goes my way so I'm going to gloat about that. Mark did then get his revenge in Bommerz but there you go. Elsewhere Mick, Roddy and a blast from the past played VBCW, Bradley and Robin played 8th and Robin hit his own knights with a comet, and Rob and Dave did something Hail Caeser ish.

Next week - me and Roddy are playing 15mm sci fi; Bradley and Taff are playing WFB 8th; the RPFC with the fully assimilated Brett are playing something Germanic; Mick and Bookmark are playing VBCW; and Vince and Andy B are probably playing FOW.

Have a think please about a Christmas do on the 14th - other halves welcome but as suggestions so far include a "WAGS table" or making them dress as camp followers, attend at their own risk.

6mm NATO Troops

So Dave has finally got his 1975-85 NATO 6mm CWC troops ready for the table top. Here are a few views of them in the final stages of preparation, namely that all important varnish. The are three mechanised rifle companies, one armoured squadron (Leopards and M48 Pattons) and supports such as Milans, Artillery and fast ground attack. In addition to the NATO forces there is a Canadian Rifle Battalion of three companies, with Grizzly APCs - but not much else ... so on with the visual show:

Games for the 12th stand pretty much unchanged, with the RPFC playing something by RP; Bradley will play WFB, and me, Bookmark and Taff will play Victory at Sea; but we do have the addition of Mick running a VBCW skirmish for stragglers who make it past Bradley.

Three of us paid a flying visit to Rygas to discuss the show - all very pleasant and amicable, and Legionary 2012 is on a good footing thanks to some support from Rygas. Cheers lads.

Only 3 games played this week - I proved that WFB was not essentially any different in this edition and lost; Mick introduced a new chap to the club and very kindly lost as well; and the RPFC played something historical in an evening that Brett likes. Who'd have thunk it.

Next week - me, Brett, Mick and Bookmark are travelling up to Rygas to discuss some show stuff, and then with no hint of irony play Very British Civil War; the RPFC are playing with uniforms. Or tanks. Maybe tanks. Bradley is playing WFB 8th with anyone too slow to another game, and if Vince and Andy B are down they'll play something. Possibly WFB 8th if they're slow off the mark.

However - Andy G wants run a Pathfinder at some point, either Shiv or a one off, so if anyone wants to play that sound off.

For the 12th, as things stand - the RPFC will play something by RP; Bradley will play WFB, and me, Bookmark and Taff will play Victory at Sea; unless something happens to change that.

Right then, briefly - Bookmark and Trainset "Wedding Planner" Hornby both missed the Pirate Game, and our chance to bid young Tom the Cabin boy farewell in a very Exmouth Club fashion. Suffice to say, the table was covered in dead seamen by the end. I think Roddy went down first though. Etc. Continue that by email at your lesiure. Down the very very far end of the room - something we said? - the insurgents were fighting the invading colonial power in the AWI game. I assume someone with a pointy hat won.

For this week, Bradley wants to play WFB 8th; Mick wants to play 40K 6th, both with Robin; everyone else can play 7YW with Rob and the RPFC. As I'm seemingly allowed down despite going on the lash Thursday I might bring something different with me.

Another slightly quieter week with the FOW players unable to face the excitement (or possibly the unpacking. Or the packing up. Or the early war army lists. Or- but I digress). Warhammer Quest proved that the rarely used Settlement Rules make hunting minotaurs look like a holiday; Brett joined the Rick Preistly Fan Club in the Indian Mutiny; and Mick made Robin pack up a whole turn early in 40K. Shame.

Next week is the closest Wenesday to ITLAPD (do your own research) so Mick is running a pirate game for Roddy, me, Trainset, Bradley, and Bookmark; and the only other game on seems to be AIW with Brett and Rob. If you're planning on coming down and aren't on the list, make yourself known...

Right then. 3 games that I remember last week - Pathfinder continued and we may have accidently stumbled over the plot; there was a big group of figures in the centre of a large table that I guess was a LOTR skirmish; and a small game of microarmour in the window.

Next (this) week we have just the two games planned; WHQ with Andy G, Bradley, Bookmark, Roddy, Tom (and no others!) and VBCW skirmish with Mick, Rob, possibly Brett and everyone else.

Right then. Only 2 games tonight, where Bill, Rob and Taff played microarmour by the window, and 4 of us proved that Magic was really just getting silly. Before that there was a Legionary meeting where many things were discussed. All looking good.

Next week - Andy G takes Robin, Roddy?, Trainset, Bookmark, Brett and me around a nice tropical island in Pathfinder; Vince and Andy B are playing something; Tom and Tony are playing something else (Must pay more attention); and the RPFC are playing GHQ Microarmour again.

Last week saw a large game of VBCW and an another case of Tank-in-Churchyard - we may as deploy them in there and have done with it. The RPFC played Bliztkrieg Commander by the window and Tom blew up Tony's trucks in Iraqistan. All perfectly normal.

Next week - now this week, apologies for the delay but I was Tripod hunting - we have BFG with Brett, Robin, Bookmark, Andy G and Trainset (good luck!); another Iraqistan game with Tom, Tony, Mick and Connor (nice language in front of the minor please!); HotT with Bradley, me, and Roddy if he's down; and according to my handwriting, Flames of War Barbarella. Which can't be right, but will probably be Mick's next period.

Last week's quote was Warriors, a classic film of gang culture, violence and social unrest, that was followed by 4 nights of gang led violence and social unrest. No matter how hard I look I can't find a film quote about a bald myopic vegetarian wargamer winning the lottery, so you'll have to settle for - "My god, it's full of stars".

Next week we have VBCW with Mick, Bradley, Brett, Mike, Robin and some fermented apple drink consuming chap from the North East; HotT with me and Roddy; 20mm modern Iraqistan with Tom, Tony, Vince and Rob; and Blitzkreig Commander with Taff and Bill.

You can tell it's Pathfinder night when most of the tape measures are still in the cupboard. Roddy proved his worth as a trap finder - albeit slightly too late in most cases - as the party wandered up and down a trail as I forgot an important item of equipment. Er, back to the camp next session lads. Sorry. Other tables saw Future War Commander, Warhammer and Very British Civil War swinging pleasantly to the left for once.

This week (well, last week now but hey) saw more meso-amercian hordes action as the Aztecs attempted to follow up on last weeks victory and failed. Lord of the Rings seemed to involve a cave troll, and books, this time; Future War Commander took on Cold War Commander - not sure how that works; Vince dealt with Andy's Incursion by the window, and the Devizes VBCW game was thoroughly practiced.

Next week - usual suspects, and Roddy for his sins, return to the desert island in Pathfinder; Vince, Mick and Mike are playing VBCW, again; Taff and Tony are playing Memoir 44, Bradley and Tom will give WFB 8th a shot, and Dave and Bill will do something Rick Preistly ish.

This week we had a fairly quiet and civilised game of Hordes of the Things overlooking the sea, while everyone else enjoyed watching a game of pre WW2 Very British Civil War. Roddy's command dice were crap at vital moments, Trainset parked in the graveyard, and the British elite mounted wing fled the scene. Think that covers it.

Next week - another VBCW Devises practice for Mick, Brett, Trainset, Bradley and Gareth; Memoir 44 with Taff (yes Taff) Tony and Bookmark; more pre-Columbus Hordes with me and Roddy and maybe Bill, or possibly Blitzkrieg commander or WFB 8th with Bill and Robin. Everyone else, bring down something to amuse yourselves.

Right then.... This week saw some games but I was busy baiting Brett in Martian Empires so wasn't paying much attention.

Next week we have the RPFC playing Marlburian Black Powder, Robin and Bill no longer playing WFB 8th, me and Roddy playing HotT, and Brett, Trainset, Bradley and Mick playing pre-WW2 as I now have to call it. But Mick seems to call it VBCW still. Anyone without a game, bring a HotT army in 15mm.

This week saw 3 games and some LOTR figures unpacked and repacked. Very British Civil War had turned into a discussion on period phone boxes when I passed it, and the Napoleonic Naval was just like ships passing in the night. That only leaves me to draw a veil, or possibly a shroud, over the annual Epic game where due to failures in army selection, deployment, tactics, and (mostly) dice rolling, the Dark Angels were wiped out by turn 2. Hey ho. I blame Roddy.

Next week - Brett and Bradley come back to Mars with me; Bill and Rob come not to praise Preistly but to Hail him; Mick and Vince descend to the Underhive, and Knuckles and Trainset are playing LOTR.

Games for 29/06/2011

Last night saw victory, defeat, and weird score draws across 4 tables. In VBCW, Tony imitated Bradley and drove through the churchyard in a tank; on Mars Bradley imitated Dave and hardly moved his army at all; in Blitzkrieg Commander Dave imitated Robin and went for the gold, and in Warhammer Robin imitated, well, Robin, and miscast his first ever spell in 8th edition. As a side note, Roddy needs to be burnt as a witch following dice rolls that saw his Martian cavalry romp through askari, rocket troopers, and finish by charging the rear of the British artillery on his opposite flank. Brett was at one point seen shaking his head and saying "now I know how Trainset feels".

Next weeks delights are a Napoleonic Naval for Rob, Tony, Brett, and Bill; Bovington practice VBCW with Mick, Andy B, Trainset and Gareth; LOTR with Knuckles and Simon; and Epic 40K with Bradley, me, and Roddy - a man who can barely see 6mm figures from his height. Should be fun.

Last night saw the club split between 1859, Warhammer Quest, Lord of the Rings and Secrets of the third Reich. All fantasy games again then.

Next week, Brett, Roddy, Bookmark and Bradley return to Mars while I try and keep order. The Rick Priestly Fan Club break away to play Blitzkreig Commander, Robin and Andy will play Warhammer 8th, no really they will, and Mick, Gareth and Trainset play Very British Civil War.

Last weeks film was X2, a modern classic. Well, a bit of a laugh anyway. This week is easier for you - " The slow blade penetrates the shield. " - anyone who doesn't get that, Phil will lend you the Webley.

In other news, there's a new gaming hall on Marsh Barton. Here's their blurb.

This week, Trainset had a mouthful at Pathfinder, before a hugely dangerous and enjoyable fight that we threw ourselves into unprepared. Again. Others were playing VBCW, LOTR, and something Rob found in Rick Priestly's bin when he last went though it. Could have been a rules ammendment, could have been a shopping list. Who knows.

Next week, we can offer a Rick Priestly Game (Rob, Dave, Bill?), Secrets of the Third Reich, if the injunction has been lifted (Andy B, Mick, Vince), Lord of the Rings (Knuckles, Simon, and Gareth and Roddy - you were warned), and Warhammer Quest - everyone else.

Games for 8th June

This week, Bradley ran an ACW encounter for Brett, Roddy and yours truely - which was truely a first. Normally when the Union army is routing from the field in its entirety, it's heading towards my side of table. With a rebel yell, etc.

The Rick Priestly Fab Club turned to ancient Egypt in their continuing quest to break Hail Caesar, and sounded like they enjoyed it. Everyone else played Strange Grog with Andy's Pirates, and why not.

Next week - the Pathfinder Fan Club will continue to wander around a tropical island in fear and distress - it's a stag weekend gone wrong. The RPFC and Vince will play either Black Powder or Hail Ceasar, and Andy B, Mick, Roddy and Bradley will be playing Very British Civil War.

Last week was obviously Highlander (there should have been only one). This week - "If you're not expected then you're not invited - SO F*** OFF!"

This week saw three games; Robin, Bill and Rob played Blitzkreig Commander with the Germans in their away strip of red, Knuckles and Simon (welcome back) played LOTR in a dark corner, and everyone else played a 8 by 6 game of VBCW. The presence of friendly fascists, religious communists, discreet Anglicans and sacrilegious scots clearly marked this as a fantasy game, and that's without mentioning Brett being Buff (it's what I heard) or the Bren carrier. I remember when you were lucky to have a school bus in this game...

Next week sees LOTR with Knuckles and Simon again, Ancients with the Rick Priestly Fan Club (Rob, Vince & Bill); Brett and Bradley playing ACW; and everyone else - Trainset, Bookmark, Mick, Andy G and Robin playing Andy B's pirate game. There will be a long hard talk about the L word at 9.

Re-visit of Tewksbury

Something to do with Kings and guns and roses ... what? So first we deployed, using Hail Caeser Ancients ruleset, our second game with these rules. Last week it was chariots and almost sharp sticks, this week the sticks are metallic and we added a little gunpowder and a lot more armour.

We had to do a few preliminaries. If each side rolled a 6 at the start one of the commanders was subjected to treachery meaning the leadership value of one commander was reduced to 5 rather than 8. Effectively making that commander useless and pretty, well treacherous. Lets take a look at the results ... both sides rolled sixes. It was going to be one of those games.

Then we began some maneouvre towards each other. Which developed into an archery dual until one side presented a weakness. In the case of the Lancastrians they started to blink first.

So they decided (with heavy hints from the umpire) to send their heavy cavalry down the flank to create a glorious victory, led by the King of course.

The Yorkists managed to get their heavy cavalry over, just in time. They let the Lancastrian charge into the pike block to weaken them before a gloriuos change in the course of British history.

In the Wars of the Roses game the Lancastrians learnt NEVER to listen to Rob. He's not right in the head you know !

On the Pirates table it was everyone versus the undead. Everyone lost then.

Magic - Was supposed to be Epic, but Robin said he would prefer to slit his throat, so he played Magic instead. The knife would have been kinder.

Battle of Megadodo - Hail Caesar - Chariots and stuff

So Black Powder gets a make over and the soldiers are given sharp sticks and knives to fight with. Nothing goes bang in these rules. Playing very similar to a modified Warmaster Ancients with Rick Priestley's tuned being played. In this battle we have Egyptians with their chariots fighting against Caananites and their chariots. A suitable mix of spearman, archers and skirmishers were also provided to try these rules out for the first time. So with suitably loud cheers the cameraman deployed ...

The Caananites charged into the valley for two reasons, they felt bravely confident and also didn't realise how dangerous it was to do this. Never mind the Egyptians rubbed their hands with glee.

The fighting was quite bloody but the Egyptians prevailed as we see ... that's right take off the casaulties ...

Although the Egyptians pushed the Caananites back up the hill and nearly managed to break their first division the reinforcements stopped the attack. Because the Egyptian reinforcements also deployed late and slowly they were unable to make any impact on the Battle. So the Egyptian God-King decided it was the fault of his generals and had them all mummified.

So Hail Black Caeser Powder have proved to be a good set of club rules allowing the gamers to enjoy the game and not be dragged into long beardy discussions on Codex wording, points values and other annoying minutia. Ta Ta.

Battle of Solferino - 1859 - The Northen Bit ...

... this bit had the Sardinian Army (Italians) attacking the Austrians. They had a bit of help. Here we can see the might of the Italian Army preparing to attack the Austrians. We were using Black Powder rules with a standard size unit being a regiment and small units battalions. But let's not spend to much time in the weeds, let's look at the piccies ...

They managed to get to the hill and charge up to attack the Austrians ...

Next came the French Imperial Guard Grenadiers who faced an easy target, a Hungarian 'unreliable' unit who did not like the look of those Bearskins ....

Anything but a one ... er , oh dear! There's always next week.

Last night saw 3 games:

On the Black Powder table Italians/French met Austrians at Solferino. Not sure what the result was, but the French/Italian armies Guards turned out to be more like Girl Guides.

In D & D the party got trapped and paid a ransom, because they were all very scared.

On the Pirates table, the Undead Pirates won the day and some very pretty Black Scorpion models painted by Andy B got blooded. A couple of them got bent after Bradley dropped his tape on them. We should have done better, but you try killing undead !

Next Week's Games:

Ancients - Rob, Andy G and James, yep James, will be Hailing Caesar.

Very British Civil War - Mick, Andy B, Vince, Brett, Trainset and Gareth will be settling scores in the 1930's.

AOB - The treasurer said he would raise a cheque to pay Legionaries insurance.

James reported plans for Legionary were on track, take up for the tournaments was good but places were still available.

The club welcomed new member Gareth. A skirmish player, he agreed to come back next week despite getting his Goblins spanked on the Pirates table.

Magic, what ? - Jamie and Bradley will be put in the darkest corner and covered with a cloth.

Last night saw 2 games. The volume for once was generated by the non-hysterical players on the BFG table as Robin managed to offend a third of his fleet into complete inaction before a ship had even moved. A few choice shots with two nova cannon saw the Orks rethink the whole "never brace" policy as the Imperial fleet score another victory. Can there be any orks left in Gothic sector?

On the the other table, Bradley was "forced to play the French" and saw the last few understrength and under-moral Prussians extend their holdings to Spain. I think.

Next week - the usual suspects are playing Pathfinder as the quick journey home after the last big fight enters it's third session. Rob and Dave are playing Black Powder something, and Andy B, Mick and Vince are smuggling pirated daleks. I may have drifted off at that point.

Last night we had 3 games. In VBCW Brett was losing again, despite facing Robin, who looked more interested in his "Gay Nights" codex than anything else. On the rennaisance table it was really a battle of manoeuvre, with the Italians crossing a river to spank the Germans. In Wings of War, Andy B and Bradley showed that Fokker DR1's and SE5a's really were well matched. Next week we have: Franco Prussian War - The tiny tiddlers will be marshalled by Vince, Rob, Bradley, Dave, Bookmarc and Andy B. At a ratio of one commander per figure by the sounds of it ! BFG - Some space thing I understand. James, Brett, Roddy, Trainset and Robin will boldly go. Well, more baldly go in some cases. That leaves Knuckles and anyone else who turns up. So if you want to play, bring a game, because Knuckles won't. AOB - The club agreed to finance the purchase of 2 foot of river from "Last Valley" and a desert mat when members visit Salute. Games for 6th April 2011

Three games last night: In the 10mm Sudan the Fuzzies stole the firing pin from the Maxim, but the game looking like a tentative draw last I saw. In D & D it looks like my scrawled note says Robin got beaver. Maybe that says berries. Either way D & D has changed since I last played it. On the Memoir 44 table Beef and I played an Arnhem scenario. From the forces arrayed it looked an easy task for the Germans. Having played the game twice, swapping sides, it clearly was anything but easy for the Germans, as they lost both times. Next Weeks Games: VBCW - James, Mick, Brett, Roddy, Robin and Trainset don suits and hats to fight over 1930's Britain, to Mick's amended FUBAR. I say, steady on chaps, we are British. Warhamster- Rob, Dave and Knuckles fight it out in a period TBC. WOW ? - Vince, Bradley, Andy B and any casuals probably fling themselves about like knights of the air in my new SE5a's. AOB - The Model shop on Albion Hill will stock a full range of GW paints from Monday. If you fancy anything else pay Leigh a visit, he doesn't bite. What he doesn't bite I can't say. Legionary - James reported all is well and we now have 19 participation and demo games. Just as well we are in a very big shed at the cattle market ! Spanish on a hill, bravely defending against smelly Frogs and awaiting Allied help ...

Then the French decide to come and play with them. Lining up in their traditional columns with skirmishers to the front ...

But the British and Portugese wanted to join in too. That's them in the distance ...

The French beat up the Spanish ...

But then Wellington spoiled the party, as usual. A fun game set up by Rob and his willing figures and terrain. Black Powder proving to be very good set of rules, especially for friendly club nights.

Games for 30th March 2011

Three games last night:

Mick ran VBCW in 28mm. Apparently it was the English v the Scots (like that would ever happen). Last I saw, the Scots were having the better of it, with Trainset's men lying down on the job, having failed to out run a Renault FT 17 tank (shame on you) and Brett not liking the spanking he was receiving from Andy G (well don't ask him to do it next time !).

In the Black Powder game, lots of really small French tried to take out some Portugezzers and Brits. Just before I left Bookmarc's French columns were amongst the Portugezzers, as the Brits marched to the sound of the guns.

In Wings of War, my new SE5a saw off Jamie's Fokker DR1 (OK he blew up and we were both fairly beasted by then). In an evenly matched battle of the aces, Kempf met Bishop and didn't live to regret it !

Next Weeks Games:

Andy G will be inviting James, Trainset, Bookmarc, Robin and Brett ? to join him down a hole in the ground in D & D. I bet they go too.

Rob and Dave will journey to the Sudan, where they will be joined by Knuckles and Beef ?, in a colonial bash, no doubt to Black Powder.

Bradley and Vince will run a game yet to be decided (WOW in default) and will mop up Jamie and Roddy if they make it.

The landlord asked that all tables should be put back against the walls at the end of the night, as he was fed up doing it.

James reported Legionary was progressing on track, assisted by a shiney tournament advert in this months White Dwarf.

Mick reported that the new cupboard was left completely open (doors not even shut) last week. All agreed this was unacceptable. Bookmarc to source a combination lock, whilst Robin will take his power tool to the cupboard. Ooh err Mrs !

FPW Campaign Game Two - more of the same?

The French prepared themselves for more of the same. They dutifully lined up and prepared the bravery medals.

This time the German Guard Corps decided to have a little go. There were quite a few of them, well actually "thousands of them Sir".

The trouble with arrogant plans is sometimes they go wrong. As mentioned in a previous post the 1st Guard Corps ran away crying like shandy drinking Sponge-Bobs. Just look below at the remnants next to the Div commander with some rather disappointing markers next to his base. Oh well! Roll on next game ...

OK, no Vince which means (Dave F here) I am in charge of the keyboard ... oh no! what can possibly go wrong. Right then, let's take a deep breath and get on with it.

What comes next? Oh yeah - GAMES FOR NEXT WEEK:
First we have a lovely Black Powder Napoleonic Game - Rob (the quiet one) will run it from deep and sunny Spain ("hey gringo"). I will also join in as well as Bookmarc (more about him later) and Brad (and more from him too).

Next game will be "A Very British Civil War" with Mick, James (probably having palpitations as he is reading this blog - ha ha ha ha ha ha ...), Robin (we have a quote later), Roddy, Trainset and Brett.

Now what happened on Weds 16th? Well, a long, long time ago somewhere in a far off part of Europe the French and Germans were at it again. Franco-Prussian War 1870. An entire German Guard Corps was unleashed on two unsuspecting French Divisions. Bookmarc had an easy job (even though Vince had left him on his own) to finish off the French - There is no way he could cock this up, was there? But Brad and Rob did have something to do with it. The French commanders carefully placed their troops, manoeuvred them when they needed to and generally played a blinder - that's what happened, which is why the German 1st Guard Division ran off screaming like girls, even though the French were a bit beaten up.

On the other table some sort of interstellar Big Friendly Giant or is that Battle Fleet Gothic game occured. Robin went home chuntering about the Imperials who used tactics to win the game. Brad and James just sniggered.

Quote of the week quote was really a comment about Robin's 40K army being dressed in 80's like leg warmer attire with big shoulder pads and big curly hair it's true, they have been out of date so long it won't be long before these fashions make a comeback.

In D & D Pathfinder, Bookmarc led the intrepid adventures astray. I wandered over to hear Robin take up the narrative, as he described the journey down a dark, dank passage and the terrible things that were encountered. I felt obliged to shout "Don't go in there boys. It's a trap.", but I couldn't stop them on their ring quest. I draw a veil over the unhappy scene.

Rob and Dave variously tried to promote or put down the Indian mutiny, with Rob's "two armies in a month" forces. Last I saw there had been a lot of shooting, but no up close and personal action.

In "Full Thrust" Mick and Bradley got well and truly shafted. A shame because Bradley had liked the rules when we started. Now he's not so keen.

Last night saw three games.

On the FUBAR table some very 40K like armies faced each other across a deadly space.

In ancient Warmaster a it looked like the Romans were taking on Brettonians, but that couldn't be the case as that would have been wrong. Maybe it was my eyesight.

In the WOW world aces Kempf and Baracca went down in flames. Looks like Italy lost their hero. Oh, well, they'll have to copy his "prancing horse" logo to use on some car or other instead.......

Next Week We Have:

Pathfinder: Jamie will be trying to take strength from the company of Brett, Andy G, James, Robin, Bookmarc and trainset. Good luck with that.

Blackpowder: Rob and Dave will be somewhere in the 18th or 19th centuries. I doubt either of them have ever left.

Sci-fi: Mick will be giving Bradley full thrust. Vince will be on the other side of the table. Well on the other side.

Devizes show: We've been invited, Mick is willing to put on a VBCW game, Andy B will probably drive. Brett to respond with tenative "yes".

Legionary: James reported adverts are placed, 13 traders and 15 games are booked so far and the tournament packs are sorted and on the website.

Last night saw Mick's army FUBAR by Jame's Black Legion. I know James hates one sided games, so it wil have given him no pleasure.

Robin played one of the most one sided WFB 8th edition games I have ever seen. Just as well James wasn't involved is all I can say.

On the Franco-Prussian table the Prussians managed to remove the nasty whining noise that was coming from the other side of the table. I still can't work out what was causing it, but it sounded a lot like it was "the dice", "not my fault", "the rules have changed" etc.

Next week we have:

Mick, Andy ?, James and Brett will be FUBAR in a 40K game clone.

Dave, Rob and Bradley will be showing what it is to be ancient to Warmaster rules.

Vince and Bookmarc take to the air like true gentlemen, in a Wings of War WW1 game. Others can play if they don't mind Bookmarc sneaking up behind them.

Leigh from www.collettsmodeltrains.co.uk (The Model shop on Albion Street, Exmouth) spoke to members about his business and the things he might be able to stock that would interest club members. It was generally felt that paints would be the best initial area to consider.

It was agreed 24 x 6mm scale trees should be sourced at Salute if possible.

This week saw a sporting and cheerful Very British Civil War game between the Ferreros and the adults. Somehow they won, but revenge has been taken on Facebook. Try being trendy now, Tom.

Rob and Andy played with some small colourful men we were told weren't wearing dresses. Dave, Dude, Bradley and Bookmark played a 2 player game of Memoir 44. All in all quite normal.

Next week, Robin and Dude try WFB 8th, Mick & I try FUBAR 40K (and I thought all 40K was fubar already) and everyone else is playing or watching Volley and Bayonet. Or FPW. Or both.

Games for 16th February 2011

Last night saw 2 games.

On the, spit, "Magic", table things did not look too magic for James, as he couldn't get any land. Ruddy competitive games I say.

On the other table, 40K Imperial Guard took on 40K Orks for a very un 40K game of FUBAR. The objective was a cross roads and after much loss of life the Ork army was definitely FUBAR.

Next week we have:

Memoir 44 - Bradley, Dave and Bookmarc build sand castles.

Very British Civil War - Mick, James and Robin enter a make believe 1930's Britain. I understand Robin is slicking back his hair as we speak.

War of the Grand Alliance - Rob, Andy B and Vince test out how the "Black Powder" rules handle pointy sticks and muskets at the same time.

AOB - James reported there had been a good response regarding demonstration and participation games. Contacts about the competitions were also strong. James is about to update the Legionary website, so keep and eye out for the latest news.

40K using FUBAR rules

So tonight was a trial of the FUBAR rules (posted somewhere on the blog according to Mick) adpated to use 40K capable troops. Imperial Guard against an onslaught of Orks, well at least that's what the Greenskins would like you to believe! Using initiative to get things on the move here is an example of how good their command rolls were tonight ...

In these rules '1' is not good. So not much happened until the the Orks decided to call for umpire assistance. Which basically went along the lines of "just move some figures anyway so we can at least get a game". The Orks dutifully obeyed and then met a hail of Guard gunfire, first the tank:Then some machine guns:

... and finally and a big pointy gun:

With the following results ... first the target, which was some sort of baked bean tin on legs and then the result, which was bascially turned into beans on toast ...

Moral of the story is not to blame the rules for bad luck with the dice - "yeah, but no, but yeah, but no, but ..."

The club has played some nice games with men marching in decent straight lines. Here is a Volley and Bayonet FPW game. The French remained nervous all night even though they were deployed on a ridge line with reverse slope capabilities. The Germans charged forward recklessly and lost a few brigades of cavalry .... Bradley! Mick threatened to turn up and play this game, but strangely got very sick!

... and then there were even striaghter lines from the Seven Years War period. This was a Black Powder run out by Rob and his multi-capable men in Tricorns.

Last night saw 3 games.

In a tinky winky Zulu game it went to the wire, but Bradley held the thin red line.

On the Incursion table, we found that Mick was more of a zombie than Yank. I think we already knew that.

In the D & D game, Bookmarc had a coke and Andy G had two cups of coffee. Oh, and someone shaved Trainset. No really. That's what I call role playing.

Andy B recognised he had no mates and decided to go to Plymouth show to find some.

James announced he had access to the Legionary website and would do some work on it in the next few days. Expect articles on Totnes and lentils.

Mick leapt up to tell everyone that "Dr Who Adventures" magazine (£2.50 from all good newsagents) had a free gift of 17 x 28mm plastic Daleks. Everyone told him this was "nice to hear" and eventually he calmed down.

Brett, sitting next to the formerly hirsute Trainset, led to cries of "separated at birth" and "twins".

Usual secretary away again this week (something about time of month or some such thing...) so I've had to step into the shoes, how he walks in these heels I have no idea...

Last night we had three games on the go, a Warmaster with Romans and Dacians doing what Romans and Dacians do, an Epic game that reached turn four with a minor Marine victory for James (put that with all the floods worldwide and its looking more and more like the Mayan prophecies are true, we're doomed!!!) and finally a 40k where the traitorous Imperial Guard (who finally had a legal army after almost a year!) had there backsides handed to them by Space Puppies...

Last night some little Prussians take on some dinkie French. By the sounds of the shouting there was plenty of elan !

Half the club appeared to be playing, spit, Magic. Trainset took the opportunity to tell the club he only had a little deck, but liked to play with it. Bless.

On the 7 Years War table the "Black Powder" rules handled a grinding draw well.

Last night saw 3 games.

In BFG James lost. Again. Why does he do it ?

On the 10mm AWI front I last saw two lines struggling for supremacy.

In "Tannhauser" Bradley switched between liking and hating the game, depending on how he was doing. He ended up loathing it.

Next Week We Have:

Franco Prussian to "Volley & Bayonet" - Dave, Bradley, Mick and Brett will be hoping they have the necessary elan to carry it off.

Magic - What ? Again ? I thought it was banned. Bookmarc, Trainset, Robin and Jamie will be corrupting Knuckles. Rolling a six here boss.

That leaves anyone else who is attending, which includes me, to organise their own game. So what we do depends on who and how many are coming, so let me know. If it's just me and Andy B, then I guess it'll be Daleks.

Games for 29th December 2010

The winter weather led to concerns about how many people would make the meeting and how long those that got there would stay, so table games replaced the scheduled running order. That said 9 members fought their way to the bar.

As it was Christmas Bookmarc, as Treasurer, found he had friends for once. All enjoyed a curry or burger + drink on the club and the landlord was smiling !

After much muttering between James and Bradley, James offered to show Bookmarc, Andy G, Tony and Knuckles some puppies he had upstairs. Once up there he opened his coat to show them what he had got. At this point Tony ran screaming to the bar, but the others were so traumatised they went along with his game and played, spit, Magic.

Luckily Sideshow, Andy B and myself had evaded James' trap and we played the much more sensible "Groo".

Next Weeks Games:

Given the weather a night of table games was agreed. Andy B is bringing "Incursion" (Zombie Nazis in Gibraltar. Why Gibraltar ?), and no doubt James will again attempt to corrupt the innocent. So if you don't fancy those, bring something else. Now don't tell me you haven't got a few table games Mick !

Weekly Round Up and Games for 22-12-10

As both Secretaries were away this week I've had to step in but I refuse to wear the skirt in the condition James has left it in...

This week had two games and some deviants in a dark corner playing with cards...

The Ottoman Turks pushed their way into Europe via Vienna with much loud discussion on both sides while in the 40k game the Imperial Guard faced off against... the Imperial Guard with no loud discussion (non-histerical gamers are so much more civilised...).

Next week we have:

Last night saw a good turn out with 3 games running.

In D & D the party fought a lobster. What sort of lives do you have to lead, to consider fighting a lobster adventurous ?

In the Ancients game, the Romans and Carthagians still had everything to play for and Mick wasn't sure about the rules (in any sense of the word !).

What can I say about Bradley's Epic game ? When I left at 10-30 p.m they were still on turn 2.

I understand Bradley may have an Epic rule book for sale. Well used, except for the section on victory conditions, which is as new. No sensible offer accepted.

This week saw Mick guiding (?) the runners and riders around the Squig race course, in preperation for Bristol show this Sunday.

Mike, Brett, Trainset and Rob fought it out in the shadows of the pyramids. Last I saw the French looked to have the edge.

In the league Andy B's Dwarves were positively beastley to James.

In WOW Bookmarc and I took it in turns to shoot at a ruddy great balloon. It's more fun than it sounds. Honest !

Last night saw me and James play a league game ! That we hadn't played in a while soon became evident, together with the fact that neither of us knew our armies. We muddled by in a good humoured fashion, taking the errors in good part (never make competition players). In the end the Ogres struggled through to a win.

In Necromunda Jamie took a beating and Robin was a big girl.

On the historical table some of the oldest figures still in existance (on e-bay they would say "Classic OOP") recreated the French invading Egypt. I don't know what happened, all I can say is Brett insisted on adopting a funny voice.

Meanwhile Bradley and Bookmarc engaged in a practice that was illegal when I was a lad.

The landlord asked for some pictures of games to be put on Exmouth's Facebook. I looked blank, but James clearly understood what he meant.

Mick confirmed that the Bristol participation "Squig Race" was to go ahead. Attendees: Mick, Vince, Bradley ?, James, Andy B ? (as a non participant !)

This week saw 2 games, both fantasy.

In Pathfinder there was a "prep" session and Brett failed his Latin vocab.

Mick ran his new show participation game. Aimed at 8 year olds, Rob, Bradley, Tony and myself had trouble getting the hang of it ! Rob spent all game learning how to jump a hedge. At 9-30 he managed it.

AOB - Mike will runs a South American war of Liberation game. Brett, Rob and Trainset will compete to be Simon for the night.

James and I will "duke it out" in the league. I will be taking Ogres and James Beastmen. I expect it will be a subtle encounter.

Mick, Robin and Roddy will be playing Necromunda. I noticed they only decided that AFTER I had got a game.

Bradley said he will "take on all comers". I guess he was referring to the Epic game he will run for Bookmarc and Tony. My money is on two turns.

Next week James is due to play Andy B in the league if Andy fancies it. Say if not.

We met the new landlord and a pleasant chap he seems to be. He will open the upstairs loos in the next couple of weeks and is keen to keep us happy and accomodate us. I suggest we try to do likewise.

Games for 10th November 2010

Last night there were 3 games.

Brett ran a 18th century 10mm bash and the Brits were looking good last I saw.

Mick put on "Squig Race" for the younger members and Robin. I'm not sure anyone knows what happened there, but all seemed to have a good time.

To celebrate the return of the T.V series I ran "Escape from Colditz". Rob and Bradley were detained (not the first time I would say) and I ran the guards. Some inventive stooging and diversions led to one of my men spending half the game locked in the toilet and Bradley being sent to solitary. Eventually the British and French double teamed one of my landsers, produced enough rope to rig H.M.S Victory and were away and free.
There then followed one of the most blatant pieces of gamesmanship I have ever seen. Rob flashed a "bribe" at one of the sentries and my man duly turned his back as a Brit ran off into the woods. Bradley then grassed up the fact that the card used was incorrect. Much consulting of the rules revealed that cheating was punishable by arrest and solitary for the prisoner in question. Unfortunately arrest is only possible in the castle or grounds and he was away and free ! In a fit of peak I arrested Bradley for being French and sent him to solitary instead.

A fourth game occupied all members. The rules were simple; defeat the Biblical plague of flies. Personally I think they were just late for Rob's Egyptian game last week. Luckily we found that the flies liked Brett !

Last night saw 4 games and a hat full of players.

In "Incursion" Andy's remaining Yank made it to the exit, after the Zombies forgot where the door was. They must be brain dead ! It was rumoured Andy was seen using unpainted figures, but I couldn't possibly confirm that.

On the 19th century table, in a move that surprised no one, Brett took the French from behind at the first opportunity.

Rob went all biblical on us and ran Mycenaeans v Egyptians. Despite looting the baggage, the collapse of the Egyptian centre gave the day to the boys with the long poles.

In the league it looks like a good year for the rats, as Bookmarc chucked Robin out of the "Adult" section of the library. Not the first time I would guess.

AOB - Well, not much to say. There wasn't any.

Next week we have:

Robin, Mick and Connor ? racing Squigs. Connor looks to be the only one fit enough to give them a run for their money.

Bradley and Jamie with the possible addition of James will be playing, spit, Magic.

Brett and Trainset will be "doing something". That worries me.

In honour of "Colditz" being back on T.V I will run the "Escape from Colditz" board game (not the rubbish Invicta one. the one with the BIG swastika on the box !). The war will be over for Rob, Bookmarc, possibly Andy G and any "casuals attendees" unless they can get enough rope.

Games for 20th October 2010

This week saw James showing everyone how to do it on Mars. As far as I can see that involved rolling low numbers on 2D6.

In Car Wars, all the combatants raced around the streets shooting and ramming other cars. Much like the Esplanade on a Saturday night really.

Bradley spanked Robin in the League. Robin blamed the dice, his army, the terrain and his parents. Naturally it was not his fault in any way.

In the east Stukas dived on the Soviet tanks, as they rushed to meet the panzers. Sadly lack of time stopped play just as it was getting interesting. Still, Andy's landships got an outing and so did my freshly painted (nearly wet !) Stug's.

The "Knuckles of the Week" quote comes, appropriately, from Knuckles. When asked by Rob if he knew his port from his starboard Knuckles replied:

"I'll read up on the Royal Navy."

Don't see how that will help, but well done anyway.

The pub announced they were trying "Winter Opening Hours". Allegedly this means closing at 10-00, although Mick later reported the pub was still allowing drinking up past that time. As an immediate response it was agreed to move the 9 O'Clock to closing time, either outside or in another pub. That way we should still be able to get in a good range of games.

Next Week We Have:

James takes on Andy G in the Warhammer League.

Jamie runs "Magic Draft" with Bookmarc and Bradley. Some silly card game apparently.

Rob will run a Napoleonic Naval game for Me, Tony and Knuckles. That should prove challenging.

Brett and Trainset will be doing something small and historical. What ? Sending children up chimneys ?

This week saw Bradley beat Bookmarc in the league. He must have warfarin resistant rats.

The Martian game was abandoned as the players missed James.

Kursk ended in a bloody draw.

Next Week we have:

Bradley trying to spank Robin in the league.

James showing Brett, Trainset and Rob how to do it on Mars.

Boommarc takes Mick, Tony and Jamie back to the 80's for a bit of Car Wars. I don't think Mick ever left the 80's.

In a change of plan Andy B tells me I am invading the Soviet Union. I voz only following orders....

This week saw an 18th century "what if" the Imperialists had lost the siege of Vienna. Ottomans under Sultan Bookmarc met Imperialists under Brett and Beef. Beef used an interesting tactic to lure the enemy into following him, described as "showing his a**e as he ran away". It must have worked as Bookmarc wore himself out and lost the game.

In "Sky Galleons of Mars", James lost. Again. Must have been the dice. Again.

In the Warhammer practice game, Bradley's Skaven took on the Ogres Bradley is lending me. Interesting game. I could get to like Ogres.

Next week we have:

Bradley's Rats v Bookmarc's Rats in the league. Warfarin all round then.

Panzerblitz - Mick takes me back to the 70's. I'm not wearing flares. Again.

Martian Empires - James, Brett, Trainset and Rob check out the canals.

Dr Who - Given Andy B missed out we thought we'd give him another chance to play Knuckles.

Anyone else coming needs to bring a game.

AOB - Mick announced he would not be running his Runequest campaign for the forseeable future

Rob asked for expressions of interest in a 4th Edition D & D game. So any interest ?

Games for 29th September 2010

A fair turnout last night saw 4 games being played.

In the Warhammer league Bradley's little rats trounced Dude's Chaos army.

Brett got that "chippy choppy" feeling in the French Indian war game.

Mick beat James twice, once with each army, just to prove James was pants. Better still he got him to agree to a re-match using Memoir '44. Same game mate, just different models. Same result ?

In the Wings of War game a couple of novice pilots (Andy G & Jamie) took to the skies with a experienced leader on each side (Bookmarc and Rob). Despite the repeated "rat-a-tat-a-tat" of the spandaus on Bookmarc's Fokker DR1 (not the toughest plane, but hideously manoeuverable and expertly piloted) the remains of Rob's plane (no rudder, damaged engine, shed loads of bullet holes) managed to successfully hit the balloon with a flight of rockets and the balloon promptly exploded ! Andy G was clearly on his way to becoming an Ace. As to Jamie, well I think Mr Kempf will be having words !

Now a new feature, the "Knuckle's" Award.This week it goes to Jamie for this little gem:

Jamie:"I need another altitude peg"

Umpire: "You're at 5 pegs. It's easier if everyone takes one off instead."

Umpire: "Not you Jamie."

Next week we have:

Trainset and James will be playing "Sky Galleons of Mars". What ?

Bradley will, to quote him, be "doing Robin", presumably followed by a cigarette and a Warhammer League game.

Mick will run a Dr Who open game with Dude and Jamie and Andy B, Mike and Duncan if they are there.

Rob will take Bookmarc, Brett and me back to the War of the Grand Alliance to "Volley & Bayonet".

AOB - Agreed Mick to run his Dr Who game at Bristol on Sunday 28th November.

Warhammer league games need to be played regularly to be finished by Christmas (slapped legs secretary).

Bradley kindly agreed to lend me his Ogre army, as my Orc's take an age to set up !
